Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner to Win First Italian Open Title
Carlos Alcaraz ended world number one Jannik Sinner's 26-match winning streak with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 triumph in the final of the 2025 Italian Open.
Sinner, competing in his first tournament since serving a three-month doping ban, was aiming to become the first Italian men's singles champion in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976. Despite holding two set points in the opener, the 22-year-old was unable to convert, allowing Alcaraz to seize momentum in a tense tie-break.
Once ahead, the four-time Grand Slam winner elevated his game, displaying sharp tactics and confident shot-making. He closed out the match with a crisp cross-court volley at the net.
"I'm just really happy to get my first Rome title—hopefully it’s not the last," said Alcaraz. "The first thing I want to say is that I'm really happy to see Jannik back at this amazing level. I know it wasn’t easy for him to return after three months, and reaching the final is something incredible. I have to congratulate him."
Reflecting on his own performance, Alcaraz added: "I'm proud of how I approached the match mentally. Tactically, I think I played well from the first point to the last."
Sinner’s winning run had extended back to October 2024, when Alcaraz also defeated him in the China Open final.
"There have been a few months that weren’t easy," Sinner admitted. "It’s already a great result to be in the final. I tried today, but that’s all I had. It was a good test."
